  1. RAUM 2 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the paperback, "RAUM," by Carl Sherrell.

Looking at this drawing of two knights in battle reminds me of the Legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, which was supposed to have happened between the years, 410 and 600 AD. It was during that period of time that the Roman Army had withdrawn from the British Isles, leaving the country without any functioning form of rule. It is referred to as "The Dark Ages" because there is no written record of what happened in England during those 190 years between 410 and 600 AD.

In 829 AD a Welsh scholar, Nennius, wrote a short piece about a brave warrior who fought and won twelve battles against the Saxons during that Dark Age period. As years went by, imaginative poets and writers referred to that warrior as "King Arthur," added "The Round Table," and embellished the story to its current legendary status.

Actually, the legend has a sad ending; The Knights of the Round Table are overthrown, and in his last battle King Arthur is defeated, surrendering his sword to "The Lady of the Lake". It's a great legend of heroic failure.

J.R.R. Tolkien, was a Professor of Anglo-Saxon history at Oxford University, an authority on that Dark Age period. It was an age of ignorance and superstition and he used it as the background for his own legend; It took him 20 years to complete "The Hobbit," and "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy.
